In a letter to Thomas Walker Gilmer, 1824 October 12, Jefferson discusses at great length the various chairs to be filled, the opening of the University and the affect that each will have on a distant legislature and doubting public. In a letter to John C. McCabe, 1836 March 3, Poe explains his refusal of a McCabe poem for the "Southern Literary Messenger."
